Help! I bought a pair of ESS Tempest Classic speakers back in 1980. The surrounds on all the woofers and radiators have finally rotted after about 27 years. I have no technical knowledge whatsoever, so brought them into my local electronics repair shop. The guy - although quite good with everything else I\'ve brought him in the past - is having difficulty (and here\'s where my lack of understanding comes into play) getting the woofer properly balanced and centred on these surrounds (if I\'m understanding him correctly). Can anyone offer me (and him) advice? I love these speakers and want them to blast again. Thanks!!

brad: if you google speaker refoam you will find several companies that can do the refoaming and there are a couple of sites that sell a kit of materials for you to do the refoaming yourself. A couple of the kit providers also have a pdf file of their instructions that shows the process and has pictures of the voice coil centering process. There are also a couple of audio forum sites that discuss the process. I purchased a refoam kit on eBay for my amt monitors- then a couple of 12in speakers came up on eBay for a reasonable price and I got them and have yet to do an actual refoam.Perhaps there is a consideration \"properly balanced\" that needs a little more exploration or discription of what is incorrect or out of balance but the centering procees using shims is covered in several of the the discussions/instructions. Please post how you come out. best of luck to you h r

I bought the same speakers when I was in the Air Force at an Air Force Exchange in Korea in 1980. On my speakers the foam around the woofers have deteriorated too and I too am trying to either replace the woofers or have the woofers repaired. If I find anything I’ll reply back to this site. I bought these Tempest Classic speakers on a close out sell but they have been exceptional and still sound great even with the suffering woofers. Years ago I did add a sub woofer to the system.

The Speaker Repair in California carries almost all ESS replacement parts. I think the website is speakerrepair.coou can find them on eBay.
