General information [contribute]

James Wong (June 15, 2009): In 1875 the Bell Patent Association was formed by Thomas Sanders and Gardiner Greene Hubbard in order to finance the telegraphic experiments of Alexander Graham Bell. In June of that year, Bell demonstrated telephone transmission of speech sounds by wire for the first time. The Bell Telephone Company was founded in July 9, 1877 and expanded steadily into the twentieth century, along the way absorbing the New England Telephone Co., Western Union Telegraph Company, American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) and Western Electric Engineering Dept among others.

In 1925, the research laboratories of AT&T and Western Electric were consolidated into Bell Laboratories and the resultant stream of major technical achievements was staggering. Just some of the discoveries and inventions included: facsimile transmission of pictures over telephone wires (1925); the first high-fidelity sound recording (1925); loudness contour curves by Fletcher-Munson (1925); equipment for the first full-length motion picture with synchronous sound (1926), woofer, midrange and tweeter crossover network for theatre sound (1932); first stereo recording on film (1941); sound spectography (1942); and the invention of the transistor (1947) and laser (1958). In the 70s they developed Unix and C+ computer languages.

From the late 1940s to the mid 1960, Bell Sound Laboratories also produced some high-quality consumer audio equipment (predominantly amplifiers and tape recorders) with distinctive styling.

Bell Laboratories continue today as a multinational Research & Development Company in the field of digital communications technology.
