General information on Sound Lab

Sound Lab manufactures or has manufactured the following equipment:

Electrostatic Speakers

Sound-Lab web site (December 2000): Sound-Lab has been in business for over nineteen years. The founders of the company, Dr. Roger West and Dr. Dale Ream, shared a belief that electrostatic transduction was potentially the optimum technology for loudspeakers. During this time the company has successfully addressed the major problems of electrostatic loudspeaker technology and has developed a series of eight speakers each of which is designed to fulfill a specific purpose.

The basic philosophy of Sound-Lab is to provide the finest products possible at each of the price points selected. Not only are the products optimum acoustical machines, but they are beautiful pieces of matched furniture that will grace any decor. Categorically, Sound-Lab is a research and development organization since it has elected to develop only truly state-of-the-art products. This means that the technology base of the company necessarily continues to grow, and this is the case. A strong patent and trademark base has resulted from this continued effort.

From the perspective of the customer, however, this could cause some uneasiness since a particular product could possibly become obsolete if the technology level passes it by. To allay this fear, we have a policy that any product we manufacture can be brought up to the present technical level at a reasonable cost. In fact, even the very first product that we offered, the Model R-1, can still be updated. Our product is meticulously hand-crafted unit by unit. Each operation is carefully accomplished and checked to make certain that it is correct. Batch processing and mass production techniques would simply not insure the individual quality of each item that we make.

Brain Walshp (December 2000): I have owned Sound Lab Ultimate-1's for about one year. As you might have guessed, I'm extremely happy with them

Models R-1, Pristine, and Quantum are no longer manufactured. In fact, the R-1 was their very first product. The Ultimate-2 and Ultimate-3 speakers (also known as U-2 and U-3) are also available, although I don't know how many pairs have been sold. The Millennium series, consisting of the M-1, M-2, and M-3 are available. Last January they introduced the Marquee center channel speaker for home theater use.

Olfoo (January 2005): Words of caution: The early Realistic electrostatic tweeters were NOT push-pull two sided tweeters but one-sided only. At appreciable volume levels the distortion rose sharply. Modern esl tweeters, including even the contemporary Janszens, have two diaphragms equally charged to plus and minus leading to a linear excursion of the constant charge diapragm between them. NOT true with the Electrostat-2 I know, I have one, and I think not true with the Electrostat-3. These tweeters do not have the usual clear clean electrostatic sound IMHO!
