General information
The Stax DMAX-2 is a power amplifier in the solid state amplifier category. It was manufactured from 1990 to 1990.
Howard Popeck (September 25, 2010): STAX described this model as follows:
Class-A with Dynamic Power Supply, Non-NFB final stage, Balaced Amplification mono power amplifier.
The DMA-X2s were produced in very limited numbers during 1990. The main markets were Japan (of course), Norway, Germany and the USA. As far as we know, none of these were ever imported into the UK. It retailed at $40,000 in the USA in 1990! Clearly one of the most expensive power amps of all time.
Over the years there have been many claims as to the greatest power amp ever built. Of course these claims are based on subjectivity and occasionally, wishful thinking. However it seems that in the USA, Germany and Norway at least, dealers for Levinson and Cello were reluctant to do home demonstrations of their products if the potential customer was using the DMA-X2. We've no way of authenticating this, but we've heard it from a couple of sources
